When is Broccoli Ready to Harvest?

Our garden is planted around Memorial Day but sometimes it is a week or two later depending on the frost forecast for our area.  We plant a row of broccoli plants while we are planting all the rest of the garden.

To learn more about how we plant our backyard garden, check out my “Creating A Garden” article.  This provides step by step instructions on how we create our western Michigan backyard garden.

I also have a “Creating A Garden Video” of our garden showing you all the vegetables that we produce. Harvest times vary from area to area.

You will know when the broccoli crowns are ready to harvest when they are fully developed.  Make sure not to wait too long to pick your broccoli because they will become seedy and loose it’s great flavor.

Where to Purchase Broccoli?

If you do not have access to growing your own broccoli, then you can purchase them.  Check out your local grocery store and search the fresh produce section.

Another great option is your local farmers market or stop by a farmers stand to see if they have any.  Frozen broccoli can also be another option.

How Do You Clean Broccoli?

Learning how to properly clean your broccoli is a must.  There is nothing worse than biting into sandy vegetables.

With a sharp paring knife, cut the broccoli crowns in the desired size.  Place the cut broccoli into a clean sink of cold water and let them float around to remove any dirt or sand.

I soak them for a few minutes to let the dirt settle to the bottom of the sink.  Scoop out the cleaned broccoli into a colander and give them one final cold rinse.

Let the broccoli pieces dry.  Use the freshly cleaned vegetable right away or store in an airtight container that is lined with some paper towel to soak up any excess water.

You can also use a vegetable spinner after the broccoli has been cleaned in cold water.  This helps to get them really dry.

How to Sauté Broccoli on Blackstone Griddle

Preheat the Blackstone Griddle to medium low heat.  If using an electric Blackstone Griddle, set the dial to 400°F.

Place a thin layer of oil or a pat of butter onto the flat top griddle.  You want to cook the broccoli, low and slow.

Once the griddle is hot, put the broccoli pieces onto the flat top.  Use a squeeze bottle of room temperature water and have a dome lid ready to cover the broccoli.

Squirt about 2 tablespoons of water on and around the vegetables.  Cover with a dome lid to trap as much of the steam as possible to help cook the broccoli.

Let cook for several minutes and then check the broccoli to see how they are cooking.  Toss the pieces with a griddle spatula to prevent burning.

Other Ways to Cook Broccoli

·       Boil Broccoli: Cut your broccoli into 1 to 1 ½ inch pieces.  Add the broccoli pieces to a large pot of water with 1 teaspoon of salt and bring to a boil. Boil for about 5 to 10 minutes. Test for doneness.  Drain broccoli, toss with some butter, salt, pepper, and serve immediately.

·       Air Fry Broccoli: With the popularity of Air Fryers, cooking broccoli is a simple and easy thing to do.  Just toss the broccoli with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and your favorite seasonings.  Place in the air fryer and cook for 7-8 minutes on 370°F. Toss the broccoli pieces in the air fryer basket halfway through cooking.

·       Steam Broccoli: Add two to three inches of water in a large pot outfitted with a steamer basket and bring water to a boil. Add broccoli florets, cover with a lid and steam (about 3-4 minutes). Then remove the basket with the broccoli florets. Don’t overcook.  Serve with salt and freshly ground black pepper along with your desired toppings.

·       Pan Sauté Broccoli: Heat olive oil (or oil of your choice) in a large sauté pan on medium heat. Use about 2 tablespoons of oil per 1 pound of broccoli. When the oil is hot, add the broccoli florets along with any spices and place the lid on the pan.  Every so often, take the lid off and toss to combine.  Cooking time will be around 5-7 minutes.

·       Oven Roasted Broccoli: Toss broccoli in your favorite high heat oil and spices of your choice.  Arrange the broccoli florets so they are flat on a large baking sheet. In a preheated 425°F oven, roast the broccoli for about 15 minutes making sure to toss the pieces about every five minutes.
