The best tartar sauce recipe is mayonnaise based with dill pickle relish, lemon juice, and seasonings. You can dress it up and dress it down as much as you like.
Make a sweet tartar sauce by adding sweet pickle relish instead of a dill pickle relish.
Tartar Sauce Ingredients

- Mayonnaise or Salad Dressing
- Dill Pickle Relish – You can also use Sweet Pickle Relish or chopped Sweet Pickles
- Lemon Juice
- Fresh Herbs – Fresh Dill is a favorite!
- Seasonings – Salt, Pepper, Seasoned Salt, and Seasoned Pepper

If you don’t have dill relish, then you can use dill pickles instead. Just replace chopped dill pickles in equal parts for the dill relish.
Dill pickles might produce more juice, so omit some of the extra pickle juice if desired.

- Dijon Mustard or Yellow Mustard

Gather all the ingredients to make your homemade tartar sauce recipe. In a medium sized mixing bowl, add the mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, lemon juice, and diced fresh dill.
Using a silicone spatula, stir to combine all the ingredients together until completely combined. Add your seasoning of choice to taste.
Remember, you can always add seasonings, but you can’t take the seasoning out of the tartar sauce. Chill in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
How to Store Tartar Sauce
Store this tartar sauce recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 6 days. Make sure this condiment does not sit out for long periods of time.
