Poor Man’s Lobster

Poor Man’s Lobster recipe is boiled fish that is healthy and so delicious!!  The first time that I heard “Poor Man’s Lobster” was when my husband cooked his freshly caught pike and he said to enjoy his poor man’s lobster!!

OMG, this is the best fish ever!! Light, flakey and topped with buttery goodness.  This pike fish boil is ready in about 30 minutes.

This northern pike recipe is reminiscent to broiled lobster.  A fish boil recipe that brings out the freshness in the fish and is so healthy.  

Born and raised in Michigan, I have eaten my share of Michigan Pike.  And hands down this poor man’s lobster with pike is by far the best meal to make for your family.

What is Poor Man’s Lobster

Poor Man’s Lobster in our house is boiled potatoes, onion and pieces of fresh Michigan pike in salted water.  It is the ultimate way to prepare pike, with a sweet rich flavor.  This is such an easy, quick meal!!

What is the Best Fish to Boil?

Any meaty whitefish such as cod, bass, halibut, and of course our favorite, Michigan pike will work for a fish boil.

How Do You Get the Y Bones Out of Northern Pike?

One thing you don’t want is bones in your boiled fish.  Removing the Y bones in your pike can be very tricky.  Check out this diagram here for more information on how to remove the bones from your pike.

How to Make Poor Man’s Lobster

Gather all of your ingredients to make your fish boil recipe.

Bring 4 quarts of water to a boil in a large stock pot over medium heat.  When the water starts to boil, add ¼ cup of the salt.  

Next, carefully add the potatoes and onion to the salted water.  Gently continue to boil until the potatoes are done for about 25 minutes.  Test the onion and potato for doneness and salt flavor.  

How to Boil Fish

Add another 1/8 cup of salt to the water with the onion and potatoes.  Carefully place the fish chunks (one at a time) into the gently boiling water.

How Long to Boil Fish

Keep the water boiling and cook for about 5 minutes.  The pike will float and turn white.  Check to make sure the fish is done.

Carefully remove the onion, potatoes and pike pieces from the salt water. You do not want to overcook the fish because it will turn into a crumbled mess.

Ingredients

  • Salt 1/4 cup (1.75oz) (50g)
  • Onion, Sweet 1/2 each (5oz) (142g)
  • Potatoes, Peeled 6 Medium 19 oz (538g)
  • Salt 1/8 cup (0.88oz) (25g)
  • Pike 13.2oz (375g)
  • Butter 1/2 cup (4oz) (115g)

Instructions
