What is the Best Long Grain Rice

After trying many brands of long grain white rice, I have not found any that I don’t like.  Use enriched, extra-long grain, long grain, medium grain, short grain rice, and organic long grain white rice with good results.

I have used Mahatma, Riceland, and the store brand white rice.  But make sure you look at the packaging very closely!

You do not want Instant rice or already cooked pouches of rice.  Minute Rice, Basmati, Jasmine, and brown rice are all different types of rice for different purposes.

Caution: When using these types of rice, you will end up with a different type of boiled rice.  You will get a different result when using these types of white rice.

Don’t have long grain rice? I have used basmati or jasmine rice in a pinch. Basmati rice is similar to long grain rice.

Do You Need to Rinse Rice Before Cooking?

Using this cooking method, you do not rinse rice before cooking.  You will rinse the rice after you have cooked it.

This removes the starch from the rice creating a non-sticky rice.

What is the Ratio of Water to Rice?

When making this best rice recipe, you will want to use 12 cups water to 2 cups dry rice.  This will create 6 cups of non-sticky cooked white rice.

For reference, to make a standard white rice recipe, this is the ratio of water to rice.  The standard water to white rice ratio is 4 cups boiling water to 2 cups rice.

In a 4-quart stock pot or larger pot, add at least 12 cups (3 quarts) water.  (Take caution when using a medium saucepan because of boiling the water over).

On a kitchen stove over medium heat to medium high heat, bring the water to a boil.  Add the salt and then the white rice.

With a wooden spoon, stir the cooked rice to prevent sticking.  Grains of rice sit on the bottom of the pan.

Reduce heat to keep the rice water at a low boil.  Do not cover the pot with a lid.  Cooking time will vary.

Stir every couple minutes to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot.  No need for stirring constantly.

After about 10-15 minutes of gently boiling the rice, test the white rice by retrieving a small spoonful and drain as much water from the spoon.  Let the rice cool and check for doneness.

If the rice is still crunchy and creates a chewy bite, continue boiling.  If the rice is tender and does not have a hard spot in the center of it, then it is time to drain and rinse the long grain white rice.

How to Rinse the Cooked White Rice

Use a fine mesh strainer or colander with small holes to rinse the cooked rice of excess starch.  Set the colander into a clean kitchen sink.

Run the cold water into the colander.  Carefully, pour the cooked rice water into the colander in a couple stages so that you can rinse the cooked rice very well.

Rinse the rice until the water runs clear of extra starch.  After all the rice is poured into the colander and completely rinsed with the cold water, let the water drain off.

Serve rice right away or store for later use.

How to Store Cooked White Rice

Place leftover white rice in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.  Reheat rice in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave or a sauté pan or small saucepan on the stove with a little bit of butter.

Leftover rice is used in recipes like rice pudding, stir fry’s, and fried rice.

How Long Will Rice Keep?

Cooked rice can be kept in the refrigerator for 5 days.  I do not recommend keeping cooked rice longer than that because the bottom of the rice will become slimy from the drained water.

The rice will also have an off texture after about 5 days.

Long Grain White Rice – FAQ

Why use a rice cooker?

Why use a rice cooker?  Rice cookers are very convenient and easy to use.  Just dump, set, and go.  Come back after several minutes and you will have great tasting rice.  Rice cookers are very effective at making easy rice at home.  If you have one!  Rice cookers take up valuable counter and cupboard space, so if you use rice frequently, then this appliance might be a good option for you.

What Does Simmer Mean?

A simmer means a low boil.  After boiling water with salt, you can put rice in the pot and let it boil. Then slowly lower the heat and keep the water and rice at a simmer. You’re hoping it bubbles up slowly but never at a boiling point that will cause the water to rise out of the pot.
