What Pulled Pork to Use?

Pulled pork comes in many forms!  Choose the pulled pork that works best for you.  Make sure to use shredded pork that is free of fat.

When shredding your pork, remove as much fat as possible.  There is nothing worse than biting into a piece of fat.

Smoked Pulled Pork – I have the best smoked pulled pork recipe for you to try!! This pulled pork recipe is made with a marbled pork butt and slow cooked on a smoker until its fall apart tender.  This is a richly flavored pulled pork recipe. You decide the seasoning that you want and let me guide you in how to make the best pulled pork that you have ever had!

Slow Cooked Instant Pot Pulled Pork – This Instant Pot pulled pork recipe might just be the perfect recipe for you.  Using this method, you can quickly pressure cook, slow cook, or combination cook the pork butt.  It is also known as a pressure cooker. You will end up with a mild flavored pulled pork.  This also creates a very tender pulled pork that is fork tender.

Store-Bought Pulled Pork – If you don’t want to mess with a smoked, slow cooked, or Instant Pot pulled pork then seek out store-bought pulled pork.  Look in the deli section and also the meat section near the hot dogs.  The store-bought version usually has BBQ sauce added to it.

Choose the Right Seasoning

Even with the use of smoking, slow-cooking, or Instant Pot cooking, seasoning is important. Picking the right seasoning when you are cooking your pulled pork will follow through in the final pulled pork sandwich.

So, choose wisely!  Try one or more of the following: spice rub, BBQ rub, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, lemon juice, lime juice, a dash of liquid smoke, apple cider vinegar, or even your favorite barbecue sauce.

Pulled Pork Sandwich Toppings

Picking the right pulled pork sandwich toppings is very important.  This will make or break a pork sandwich.

Are you making pulled pork sandwiches for a crowd?  Consider creating a toppings bar so that your guests can pick which toppings to personalize their own pulled pork sandwiches.

  1. BBQ Sauce – Try my amazing homemade BBQ sauce. It’s sweet, thick, and a little bit peppery.
  2. Coleslaw – The crunchy texture in the vegetables complements the soft and savory flavor of the sandwich.  Try a creamy coleslaw, vinegar coleslaw, or a pickled coleslaw.  This greek yogurt coleslaw is a great non-mayo option. Check out the deli section at your local grocery store.  I like to get freshly made creamy coleslaw from the deli counter.  Or you can try one of these 30 slaw recipes.
  3. Pickles – Dill or sweet pickles?  Chips or slices?  Mild or Spicy Pickles? So many choices for you to choose from.  Mix and match until you find the right combination of flavors that suits you.
  4. Onion Rings – Freshly made crispy onion rings will add another dimension to your pulled pork sandwich.  Make shoestring onion rings for a different taste.
  5. Pickled Vegetables – Pickled Red Onions or Pickled Asparagus
  6. Cooked Bacon
  7. Jalapeño Slices – Fresh or Pickles
  8. Hot Sauce – A Dash or Two will do!
  9. Avocado Slices – Freshly Sliced
  10. Fried Onions – Caramelized Onions can be cooked up ahead of time for easy preparation.
  11. SaucesLick-dob, Sriracha Aioli, Pesto Aioli, Horseradish Sauce, or Bacon Aioli
  12. Sautéed Mushrooms – Use the Mushrooms of your choice.  Try Morel Mushrooms, Button Mushrooms, or Shiitake Mushroom Slices
  13. Cheese Slices – Cheddar, Colby Jack, Swiss, Provolone, American, Pepper Jack, Havarti, and even Velveeta slices

Pork Sandwich Buns

Picking the right sandwich bun is very important.  If you pick the wrong bun for your sandwich, it can ruin your whole meal.

Choose a soft bun that is freshly made.  Try a brioche bun, a homemade hamburger bun, sourdough bun, honey buns, sesame buns, onion bun, and a sub bun would also work.

I do not recommend a pretzel bun because even though it looks beautiful, its chewy and tough with a hard outer shell making it difficult to eat.

If you want to take your sandwich to another level, then toast the insides of the bun until its golden-brown.  You can do a dry toasting or add a smear of butter and then toast.

How to Make Pulled Pork Sandwiches

Gather all the ingredients to make the pulled pork sandwiches. You should have your prepared pulled pork, the bun of your choice along with whatever toppings that you like.

Sandwich Ingredients: Shredded Pork, Onion Bun, BBQ Sauce, and Creamy Coleslaw.
Sandwich Ingredients: Shredded Pork, Onion Bun, BBQ Sauce, and Creamy Coleslaw.

Open the bun and place the bottom piece on a serving tray or plate.  Add the shredded pulled pork to the bottom bun.

You can use barbecued pork, warm pulled pork, or room temperature pulled pork.  I do not recommend using cold pulled pork.

Top the shredded pulled pork with your favorite sauce such as BBQ sauce.  Then add the other toppings of choice such as creamy coleslaw.  Then place the top bun on and serve with your favorite pulled pork sides.

BBQ Shredded Pork Sandwich

I love a great BBQ pulled pork sandwich!! When done right, BBQ pulled pork sandwiches can be mass produced to feed a large crowd with ease.

The best way is to use a roaster, slow cooker, or crock pot to prepare your BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. Add the shredded pork shoulder roast to the roaster, slow cooker, or crock pot on the low setting.

Then add barbecue sauce, chicken broth, and any seasoning of your choice. Stir to combine and let it slow cook for a few hours.

For a more in-depth step by step of this BBQ pulled pork recipe, come back soon. If you want a faster version, then place all ingredients in a pot on the stove.

Cook on medium heat stirring constantly to prevent burning. Serve on buns with your favorite toppings and sides.

What to Serve with Pulled Pork Sandwiches?

There are so many options for what you can serve with pulled pork sandwiches.  Potato chips are always my go to when I don’t have time to prepare anything else.

For a salad option try this cucumber tomato onion salad, German potato salad, broccoli salad, kachumber salad, and cajun pasta salad.

Other side options are air fryer corn on the cob, deep fried French fries, and sweet potato fries.
