A charcuterie board is a grouping of bite-sized assortment pieces of food that is displayed attractively on a wooden board.  Guests can enjoy as little or as much of the snacks as they would like.

Different Board Ideas

If you like party boards as much as I do, then you are going to want to make all different themed ones. One of my favorites is a dessert charcuterie board. Check out this great collection of camping party food ideas.

Where to Buy a Charcuterie Board?

Charcuterie Boards come in many shapes and sizes. Expecting to pay close to $100 for a good board, I was surprised to only pay $35.

When I decided to make my meat and cheese charcuterie board, I went to my local kitchen store called The Ideal Kitchen in Manistee, Michigan. I also found some of the bowls that I used for the fish dip, pickle fish and pickled onions.

For a Charcuterie board option go HERE. Here are 3 ounce ceramic dip bowls that I like to use when making boards.

How to Make a Charcuterie Board

Start by choosing the appropriate size board or boards for the number of guests that you plan to serve.

Choose the dishes that you will use and fill with your desired items.  The dishes that you use can add height to the board.

Pick a centerpiece for your board.  Place the centerpiece on the board first and then arrange the filled dishes in your desired location around the centerpiece.

I like to add pickled items in small bowls or dishes so they don’t leak all over the other items. Try an assortment of pickled fish recipes, pickled onions, pickled beans, and citrus olives for a charcuterie board. Then lay the assortment of cheeses on the board.

Artfully place the meats into open spaces around the dishes and the centerpiece.

Best Meats for Charcuterie Board

Cured meats work best if your board is not going to be at a controlled temperature.  Thinly sliced deli meats also work.

My preference is wild game sausage logs and sticks, wild game cheese dip made with ground burger, smoked salmon pieces and smoked salmon cream cheese dip, finished off with pickled fish

Best Cheeses for Charcuterie Board

An assortment of hard cheeses works best for a charcuterie board.  Slice the cheese in thin pieces and fan in an attractive way.  You may choose to use a soft cheese that is in its own container or a bowl of your choice.

Best Crackers for Charcuterie Board

Pick crackers and chips that your family likes.  The last thing that you want is to have snacks that your family and friends do not like.  Artisan crackers are a great choice.  My family likes simple butter crackers to go with the flavorful meat and cheeses. Try making your own cheese straws to add to your charcuterie board.
