Picking the right bread slice is the most important of this grilled cheese sandwich recipe. Not all breads are the same, so choose wisely!!
The variety of breads greatly depending on what you like. You want a soft yet solid slice of bread that will hold up to spreading the butter on it. Great choices would be:
Homemade White Bread: My top pick of the best grilled cheese sandwich is a local hometown stores freshly made white bread.
Artisan: A white bread that has the perfect texture and is super soft.
Italian: Another perfect option that creates a great griddle sandwich!
Sourdough: Sourdough bread has a tangy flavor.
Ciabatta: A firm bread that pairs well with the assortment of cheeses.
Texas Toast: A nice thick slice of bread.
How to Make a Blackstone Grilled Cheese
Learning how to make a grilled cheese on the Blackstone Griddle is easy to do! Preheat your Blackstone Griddle on medium heat. With an electric Blackstone griddle (e-series), set the dial to 400°F.
Gather all the ingredients to make the 3 cheese grilled cheese sandwich. Butter one side of both pieces of bread with a thin even layer of softened butter. Build your cheese sandwich off the griddle.
First, lay one of the buttered pieces of bread face down on your clean work surface so the butter side is on the bottom and the un-buttered side is facing up. For a three-cheese grilled cheese sandwich, add three layers of your choice of different cheeses on top of the bread.
Finally, place the second piece of bread on top of the cheese sandwich stack so that the buttered side of the bread is up.
How to Cook a Grilled Cheese
Once the Blackstone Griddle is hot, place the whole assembled sandwich so the bottom buttered layer of bread is on top of the Blackstone Griddle flat top grill. Cook for about 1 to 3 minutes until the bread is golden brown.
Use a dome lid or the griddle cover to help with the cheese melting process. Make sure to keep an eye on the cheese sandwich so that it does not burn.
Using a griddle spatula, flip the grilled cheese over to the other side and continue cooking for another 1 to 3 minutes until the second side is nicely golden brown. Make sure cheese is melted.
Remove from the hot griddle when done and serve immediately. Cut in half and pair with your favorite tomato soup or side dish.
Other Cooking Methods for Grilled Cheese
If you don’t have a Blackstone Griddle, that’s okay. Use one of these other cooking methods to create your homemade sandwich.
- Sauté Pan – this is my go-to way of making grilled cheese sandwiches.
- Oven Baked – place prepared sandwiches on a baking sheet and bake @ 350°F until browned.
- Grill Pan – if you want grill lines on your cheese sandwich, use a grill pan on the stove.
- Outdoor Grill – if this is your only cooking option, then do it!
