Apple Fritter Bread
The bread used to make apple fritters can be done several ways. Make a homemade dough recipe that is made with several ingredients.
I like to make this easy by using frozen dinner rolls or bread. Just thaw the dough, let it rise and then mix.
What is an Apple Fritter?
An apple fritter contains apple pieces and a type of dough that is mixed and then deep fried until crispy. Then topped with a glaze of your choice.
What is Apple Fritter Made of?
My apple fritter is made of diced apples, bread dough, oil for deep frying and a sugar glaze to cover the freshly cooked doughnut.
How to Make Apple Fritters
Gather all ingredients to make your apple fritters donut.
Remove the dough from the freezer and thaw. Let the dough rise once before mixing with the apple pie filling.
Make the apple filling by cooking down your diced apples or use a can of apple pie filling that you cut into small pieces.
Use a KitchenAid Mixer to combine the dough and the filling together. Cut or break the dough into smaller pieces before putting into the mixer. You may have to do the fritter dough in two batches, depending on the size of your mixer.
How to Cook Apple Fritters Donuts
Preheat the Blackstone Griddle to medium/high. Place a disposable 9×13 foil cake pan onto the griddle and fill about half way with frying oil of your choice.
We always fry with peanut oil in our house. There is no peanut allergies in our family so we do not have to worry about that.
Heat the oil to 375°F. Use a dome lid to help heat and keep the oil to the right temperature. Use a digital thermometer to keep track of the proper temperature.
Once the oil has reached the right temperature, use a fryer slotted spoon to help put the fritter dough into the hot grease. Make sure the fritters are not to big otherwise they will not cook all the way threw. Be careful not to burn yourself with the hot oil.
Let the apple fritter dough get golden brown on one side. When ready, flip the fritter with the slotted spoon.
Let cook and flip again. You want the fritters to be dark brown in color.
Make sure the center of the fritter is done before removing from the hot oil. When done, place the fritters onto a paper towel lined plate.
Apple Fritter Glaze
Make the glaze. Dip the fritters into the sugar glaze and coat completely. Place the fritters onto a wire rack to dry.
Griddle Apple Fritters Donut Tips and Tricks
- Make your own apple pie filling or just use a can of apple pie filling and cut the apples into small pieces.
- Just mix the dough until all ingredients are incorporated. Do not overmix the dough.
- USE A DIGITAL THERMOMETER: Oil should be 375°F – If the oil temperature drops to low, the fritters will soak up the oil and the fritters will become greasy. If the grease gets too hot, the fritters will burn. Remember that when the apple fritters are added to the oil, the temperature will drop. Adjust the griddle heat accordingly.
- A dome lid will help heat up the oil on the griddle.
- Do not over crowd the pan when deep frying. Give the fritters room to cook!
- When removing the fritters from the oil, use a paper towel lined plate to soak up any of the extra grease.
- Make sure the sugar glaze is not too thick and not too thin.
- Store any uneaten apple fritter on a layer of paper towels and put inside a clean paper bag.
Apple Fritters Donut – FAQ
Yes, an apple fritter is a donut. It is deep fried like a doughnut, but an apple fritter is not rolled and cut out like an average donut. The apple fritter doughnut is a cluster of apple infused dough pieces that are deep fried until crispy brown.
If you are cutting calories, then you do not want to have an apple fritter donut. These fritters are 328 calories each.
A firm apple works best when making the homemade apple filling. You want the apple to be great tasting but also cooks down some and does not turn to mush. My favorite apple is honey crisp but fuji and gala works good also.
