Mozzarella Pearls
Have you tried mozzarella pearls? Mozzarella pearls come in different sizes and different names.
Perlini mozzarella are pearl-like balls that come in small containers. Use Perlini balls on salads, pasta dishes and even mini pizzas.
Another type of cheese pearls is the Ciliegine mozzarella balls that are about the size of a cherry. These are great for marinated skewers along with cherry tomatoes.
A bocconcini is another type of cheese ball. The bocconcini is about the size of an egg. Learn more about mozzarella pearls at: The 9 Types of mozzarella.
How to Make Fried Mozzarella Balls
Gather your ingredients to make your mozzarella balls.
Set up your dredging station ingredients using three different bowls. Have one small bowl for breadcrumbs, place flour in another bowl, and another one with the egg and milk that is beaten together.
Use mozzarella pearls or sticks of string cheese that have been cut up into pieces. For this recipe, I used small pieces of string cheese sticks.
Start with the flour, then the egg wash, then the Italian breadcrumbs, back into the beaten egg , and then finally the Italian breadcrumbs. Let me repeat this process with a little more explanation.
Roll the cheese piece into the flour and tap off any excess flour. Then completely cover the mozzarella with the egg wash.
Next, toss the dipped balls into the Italian breadcrumbs to coat completely and evenly. Go back to the egg wash and carefully dip the fully Italian breadcrumb coated cheese ball with the egg.
Finally, coat the mozzarella with a beautiful layer of Italian breadcrumbs. Repeat these dredging steps until all the mozzarella balls are coated.
Use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to place the fully coated mozzarella balls in a single layer. Freeze the breaded cheese balls for at least 2 hours.
How to Deep Fry Mozzarella Balls
On a Blackstone Griddle
To fry the breaded cheese balls on a Blackstone Griddle, place a pan on the flat top. Fill the pan halfway or about two inches with your favorite frying grease.
I like to use peanut oil for frying, but you can use frying oil, vegetable oil or canola oil. The oil for frying is a personal preference and will not make a difference in the final product.
Turn the burners of the Blackstone Griddle to high to medium heat. Cover the pan with a dome lid.
Use a digital thermometer to help keep track of the oil temperature. I really like using a Taylor Digital Thermometer.
You want the oil to be 375°F. Once the oil reaches 375°F, carefully place the frozen small mozzarella balls, one at a time into the hot oil. DO NOT OVERCROWD THE OIL!!
Turning occasionally and work in batches if needed. The cheesy balls will cook up quickly (2 to 3 minutes) so make sure to keep a close eye on them.
When they float and turn golden brown, remove the balls from the oil with a metal slotted spoon. Place them onto a paper towels lined plate to soak up any excess oil.
You can also use a deep fryer or a small saucepan on the stove with oil to cook your cheese balls.
What to Serve with Fried Mozzarella Balls
Serve with your favorite dipping sauce such as ranch dressing or marinara sauce. My favorite sauce for dipping is a sweet marinara sauce.
How to Store Mozzarella Balls
After the fried mozzarella bites has been cooked and cooled down, leftovers can be stored in a container lined with parchment paper or paper towels. Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 days.
To reheat the cheese ball, use the air fryer for best results set at 400 for up to 5 minutes.
Fried Mozzarella Balls – FAQ
Yes, these mozzarella balls will melt, and the cheese will ooze out of them. The cause is frying them when they are not frozen. If they start to come to room temperature, the cheese will melt much faster during deep frying. Hence, oozing out of the breading shell when they are being cooked.
Mozzarella balls has different names depending on how its served. This recipe is called fried mozzarella balls and has a breading around the mozzarella which makes a great snack cuisine. Another great recipe is using cherry size balls of mozzarella that has been marinated with cherry tomatoes and then added to skewer sticks.
