Tips for Frying Fried Cheese Sticks

  • Use a digital thermometer to make sure your frying oil is at 375°F.
  • Do Not Overcrowd your oil by cooking to many breaded mozzarella sticks at one time.
  • Make sure to give yourself enough time to freeze your sticks after breading them.
  • Freeze this cheese sticks recipe for at least 2 hours so that the cheese does not melt out while frying.
  • This recipe is best served warm right after it has been fried.

How to Make this Cheese Sticks Recipe

Gather your ingredients to make your fried mozzarella cheese sticks.

Mozzarella Cheese Sticks Ingredients - String Cheese, Breadcrumbs, Egg Mixture, Flour, Salt and pepper.
Mozzarella Cheese Sticks Ingredients

Set up your sticks breaded dredging station ingredients so that you can work quickly. Use three different bowls.

Have one small shallow bowl for breadcrumbs, combine flour, salt and pepper in a second bowl, and the third with the egg and milk that is beaten together. For this recipe, I used string cheese sticks.  Cut each string cheese mozzarella sticks in half.

Start by rolling the stick with the flour mixture, next roll in the egg mixture, move on to the breadcrumbs making sure to get an even coating, back into the beaten egg mixture, and then finally an even coating of the breadcrumbs.

Let’s repeat this process with a little more explanation.  Roll the cheese stick into the flour mixture and tap off any excess flour.

Then completely cover the mozzarella stick with the egg wash.  Next, toss the cheese stick into the breadcrumbs to coat completely and evenly.

Go back to the egg wash and carefully dip the fully breadcrumb coated cheese stick with the egg. Finally, coat the breaded mozzarella cheese stick with a beautiful layer of breadcrumb mixture.

Repeat these dredging steps until all the mozzarella cheese sticks are coated.  Use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to place the fully coated breaded sticks in a single layer.

Place breaded cheese sticks in the freezer for at least 2 hours.

How to Deep Fry Mozzarella Sticks on a Blackstone Griddle

To fry the breaded mozzarella cheese sticks recipe on a Blackstone Griddle, place a pan on the flat top.  A disposable foil 9 x 13 cake pan works best.

Fill the pan about two inches with your favorite frying grease.  My family likes to use peanut oil for frying, but you can use any frying oil, vegetable oil, or canola oil.

The oil for frying is a personal preference and should not make a difference in the final product. Turn the burners of the Blackstone Flat Top Griddle to high heat.

You might have to adjust the heat temperature of the griddle to keep the oil at 375°F.  Do not overheat the oil!

Cover the oil pan with a dome lid so that the oil will heat up faster.  Use a digital thermometer or frying thermometer to help keep track of the oil temperature.

You want the hot oil to be 375°F.  Once the frying oil reaches 375°F, carefully place the frozen mozzarella sticks, one at a time into the hot oil.

DO NOT OVERCROWD THE HOT OIL!!  Turn the sticks occasionally and work in batches if needed.

The cheesy sticks will cook up quickly (2 to 3 minutes) so make sure to keep a close eye on them.  When the fried mozzarella cheese sticks float and turn golden brown, remove them from the oil with a metal slotted spoon.

Place them onto a paper towel lined baking sheet to soak up any excess oil.  Serve warm.

Other Frying Methods

Deep fried mozzarella cheese sticks can be done several different ways.  I like to deep fry on top of my Blackstone Griddle while making other recipes.  You can also use a deep fryer or a large saucepan on the stove with frying oil to cook your breaded cheese sticks recipe. My family prefers to deep fry in the garage or outside so that our house does not smell like grease for days.

What Dipping Sauce to Serve with Fried Cheese Sticks Recipe?

You can serve your Blackstone fried cheese sticks with your favorite dipping sauces such as ranch dressing or marinara sauce. My favorite dipping sauce is a sweet marinara sauce.  Try a white queso dip, cheese sauce, peanut sauce, bang bang sauce, Chick-Fil-A sauce, sriracha sauce, pizza sauce, and flavored mayo’s and flavored ranch dressings.

How to Store Fried Mozzarella Sticks

After the fried mozzarella cheese sticks has been cooked and cooled down, leftovers can be stored in a container lined with paper towels.  Store in the refrigerator for no longer than 6 days.  To reheat your mozzarella sticks, use the air fryer for best results set at 400 for up to 5 minutes.  Watch closely so that all the cheese does not melt out of the breading. Oven baked mozzarella sticks are another option for heating up leftovers.

Fried Cheese Sticks Recipe – FAQ

What Cheese are Cheese Sticks Made of?

Cheese sticks that are deep fried are best made with mozzarella string cheese sticks.  Mozzarella cheese is the only cheese with the pull apart string qualities so that is why it is best for fried cheese sticks.

Should I Freeze Mozzarella Sticks Before Frying?

Yes, you should freeze homemade breaded mozzarella cheese sticks before frying so that while the outside breading is cooking and getting golden brown the inside is slowly thawing.  This ensures that the cheese does not melt to quickly and ooze out of the breadcrumb crispy shell while frying.

What is the difference between fried mozzarella and mozzarella sticks?

Fried mozzarella cheese sticks are a piece of breaded mozzarella stick that is deep fried with a crispy outer shell and a melty cheese center.  String cheese mozzarella sticks is what you use as the base of your fried mozzarella.  Mozzarella sticks is individual pieces of string cheese.
