What Kind of Pulled Pork Should I Use?
For this Pulled Pork Smash Burger recipe, you can use any tender, shredded pulled pork that you have on hand. I love making pulled pork a couple of different ways, including smoked pork and slow-cooked pulled pork, and either one works wonderfully for this recipe. This is also a great way to turn leftover pulled pork from another meal into something completely new!
Don’t have any pulled pork already prepared? No problem! You can also pick up a package of prepared pulled pork from your local grocery store. Just make sure it is tender and easy to shred before using it for your smash burgers.
Whether you’re using freshly made pulled pork, leftovers, or store-bought shredded pork, this recipe is an easy and delicious way to give it a whole new purpose.
Ingredients
- Pulled Pork
- Cheese Slices
- Brioche Buns
- BBQ Sauce
- Coleslaw
- Butter or Country Crock Sizzle
How to Make Pulled Pork Smash Burgers
Gather the Ingredients: Gather your pulled pork, cheese slices, brioche buns, BBQ sauce, coleslaw, and butter or Country Crock Sizzle.
Preheat and Form the Pulled Pork: Preheat your Blackstone Griddle to medium heat. Take the pulled pork and form it into approximately 4-inch balls. Keep the pork packed together enough that it holds its shape when you place it on the griddle.
Toast the Brioche Buns: Spread butter or Country Crock Sizzle onto the hot griddle. Place the brioche buns cut-side down into the butter and toast until they’re beautifully golden brown. Remove the toasted buns from the griddle and set them aside.
Add the Pulled Pork and Smash: Add the pulled pork balls directly onto the buttered griddle. Using a Blackstone spatula or burger press, firmly smash each pulled pork ball into a thin patty. The thinner you smash the pork, the crispier golden edges you’ll create.
TIP – Steam Cook the Patties: For an extra tender and flavorful smash burger, squirt a little water around the patties and cover them with a dome lid. The trapped steam helps heat the pork while keeping it moist.
Flip the Patties: Once the first side is golden brown and crispy, carefully flip the patties. Continue cooking until the second side is also beautifully golden brown.
Add the Cheese: Place a slice of cheese over each pulled pork patty. Cover with the dome lid for a moment to help the cheese melt.
Build the Sandwich: Stack the cheesy patties onto your toasted brioche bun. Drizzle the pulled pork with your favorite BBQ sauce and finish with a generous spoonful of creamy coleslaw. Serve your Pulled Pork Smash Burger immediately with your favorite sides and enjoy!
What to Serve with Pulled Pork Smash Burgers
These Pulled Pork Smash Burgers are hearty enough to stand on their own, but they’re even better with a delicious side dish. Serve them with crispy Blackstone potatoes, French fries, onion rings, potato wedges, or a simple garden salad. For a cookout, add some grilled corn on the cob, baked beans, or your favorite summer side dishes.
If you’re making these burgers on the Blackstone, you can even cook many of your side dishes right alongside the sandwiches for an easy outdoor meal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! I love the buttery flavor and soft texture of brioche buns, but you can use hamburger buns, potato buns, pretzel buns, or your favorite sandwich rolls.
Cheddar, American, Colby Jack, pepper jack, or provolone are all delicious choices. Choose a cheese that melts well and complements the BBQ flavor of the pork.
Adding a little water around the patties and covering them with a dome lid creates steam. This helps heat the pulled pork while keeping it tender and also helps melt the cheese once it’s added.
Of course! The creamy coleslaw adds a wonderful cool, crunchy contrast to the crispy pork and BBQ sauce, but you can leave it off or substitute pickles, sliced onions, jalapeños, or another favorite topping.
