The Perfect Potato for a Smoked Baked Potato

The best potato is a firm large russet.  If you use other potatoes such as red potatoes, yellow potatoes, or Yukon gold potatoes, you will get a different tasting baked potato.

For making baked potatoes on the smoker with the perfect texture use russet potatoes.  It’s starchy property and low moisture make these the perfect baking potato.

More starch in cooking makes russet potatoes softer & fluffy. Ideal qualities for absorbing sweet creamy butter. When you choose the right potatoes, you will not be disappointed with the finished smoker cuisine.

What Seasoning for Baked Potatoes?

Use the seasonings found in your pantry.  You won’t need to go to the supermarket for special seasonings.  This side-dish includes whole russet potatoes with your favorite seasonings.

Use the seasonings that you normally like to use.  Some sort of salt and pepper works best.  My family prefers Lawry’s Seasoned Salt and Morton Natures Seasonings.

Smoked Baked Potato Ingredients

Four ingredients are all that you need for this great side dish recipe.  You do not even need to go shopping for special items!

Just look in your pantry.  No aluminum foil needed. This is all you need to make a mouthwatering smoked potato recipe.

  • Russet Potatoes – Large
  • Olive Oil – Other Options are Seasoned Olive Oil, Softened Butter, or other type of oil.
  • Salt – Seasoned Salt will also work!
  • Pepper – Seasoned Pepper adds great flavor!

With a sharp knife, carefully poke about 6 holes into the skin of each potato.  With your hand, rub the olive oil on the whole outside of each potato.  Season each potato with your favorite seasonings.

Place the prepared potatoes on the grill grate of the pellet smoker.  If desired, insert the temperature probe into the largest potato and hook-up to the control panel.  Close the lid and let the potatoes cook.

How Long to Smoke Baked Potatoes?

Cooking time will vary for every smoker but should be between 2-3 hours.  If you are using the instant read thermometer probe, the internal temperature of a fully cooked baked potato is between 205°F – 210°F.

Not using a temperature probe.  One way to test smoked baked potatoes is to pierce them with a fork.  If the fork inserts easily and is fork tender, then it’s done.

Another way of testing a baked potato is to gently squeeze it.  If the inside of the potato breaks apart, then it’s done.  But if the baked potato is still firm, then cook it some more.

Once the smoked baked potatoes are done, remove from the pellet grill using oven gloves, and serve immediately with your favorite toppings.

Smoked Baked Potato Toppings

The potato is very good with a little butter, and it becomes even better if it is stuffed with one or more of the following amazing toppings.  Kid friendly chili or a cottage cheese mac and cheese paired with a piping hot baked potato makes a great combination! Serve your favorite topping on the side or top the potato with a big ladle full!

Create a toppings bar with an assortment of different ingredients.  Some favorite toppings might include:

Butter – Softened or Melted Butter

Shredded Cheese

Liquid Cheese

Smoked Bacon Pieces

Sour Cream

Garlic Butter

Pulled Pork

Diced Green Onions

Seasonings – Onion Powder, Black Pepper, Garlic Powder, Kosher Salt

How to Store Smoker Baked Potatoes

Store leftover cold smoked baked potatoes in an airtight container for up to 6 days in the refrigerator.

Reheat potatoes in the microwave for 30 seconds intervals until the desired temperature is reached.  Leftover baked potatoes make amazing twice baked potatoes.

Smoked Baked Potatoes – FAQ

Why use a pellet smoker to make baked potatoes?

In contrast to other food techniques, pellet smoking does not need constant supervision and requires little maintenance. The main advantage with pellet smokers is to place the prepared potatoes on the smoker along with your main dish, insert the thermometer, and close the grill lid. This helps keep your smokers internal temperature constant and the pellet smoke around the cooking food.  The temperature of the smoked bake potatoes can be monitored from the out-side of the smoker.

How much is the smoking time on a baked potato?

The smoking time of a baked potato is about 2 – 3 hours.  The cooking time required for the smoked bake potato will differ depending on the size of the potatoes and temperature fluctuation of the pellet grill.

Can smoked baked potatoes be wrapped in foil?

You shouldn’t put the uncooked potato in the foil like a traditional baked potato. The smoke will not penetrate through the foil.
