How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Naan

Mix the Naan Dough:  In a KitchenAid Mixer with a flat paddle combine the flour, sugar, salt, eggs, milk, yogurt, olive oil, and active dry yeast together.  Add the water and beat for about 2 minutes to make a smooth dough.

Rise the Dough:  Grease a large bowl and scrape the prepared dough into the bowl.  Cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel.  Let the dough rise/ferment for 2 hours in a warm place.  The naan dough should double in size.

Divide the Dough:  Portion out the dough into 4-ounce pieces using a kitchen scale.  Shape the dough pieces into smooth balls.  Place the rounded balls onto a lightly floured surface. Brush some oil onto the top of each ball and cover with a clean cloth for at least 30 minutes.

Shape the Dough:  Flatten a dough ball by gently stretching with both hands.  Make into 6–7-inch rounds.  Continue with the amount of naan breadsticks that you want to make.  (See how to store unused dough balls below)

My choice of flat top griddle is a Blackstone Griddle. Pick from a gas griddle or an electric griddle. They come in various sizes, accessories, and options. How to Griddle Cook Naan Bread

Prepare the Blackstone Griddle:  Preheat your flat top griddle to medium heat or your electric Blackstone Griddle to 350°F.  Once hot, place a thin layer of oil onto the griddle.

Cook the Naan Bread:  Place the pre-shaped dough pieces onto the griddle.  When the naan bread is golden brown, flip over to cook the other side.  Once the naan bread is cooked, remove to a cutting board.

Make the Sugar and Cinnamon Breadsticks

Cinnamon Sugar Mixture:  Combine the cinnamon and sugar in a large bowl.  Melt the butter in a separate bowl.  Using a pastry brush, spread the butter onto the naan bread.

Cut and Toss:  Cut the buttered naan into long strips.  Place the strips into the bowl of cinnamon sugar.  Toss to coat the breadsticks with the cinnamon sugar.  The cinnamon sugar sticks are best served warm but can be served at room temperature.

How to Store Unused Naan Dough

If you decide not to use all the naan dough, that’s okay.  Place each dough ball into a separate plastic baggie making sure to remove as much air as possible.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 6 days.  You can also freeze the dough by placing the baggies of dough into an airtight container or a freezer zip-lock bag.

Freeze for up to 6 months.  When ready to use the dough, remove from the refrigerator or freezer and let rise before making your naan bread.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is naan gluten free?

No, basic naan bread is usually made with flour which contains gluten.  But you can make gluten free naan bread by swapping out the all-purpose flour for gluten free flour.  Just make sure to use gluten free flour when resting and forming the dough.

Can I cook these breadsticks on the stove instead of on a Blackstone Griddle?

Yes!  Use a hot greased sauté pan over medium heat.  Place the shaped dough in the pan, cook until golden brown and then flip over to cook the other side.  Remove and toss in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
