What is Cocoabombs?
A bomb is a hollow chocolate shell that is filled with hot chocolate mix and your favorite toppings such as marshmallows. The chocolate shells can be made of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white or colored chocolate.
My preference is to use wafer chocolate, but you can use chocolate chips, bar chocolate or chocolate melts.
How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs
Step One
How to melt chocolate.
My favorite way is to melt the chocolate in the microwave. Tips to know before you start melting your chocolate in the microwave.
- Use a wide mouth glass jar to melt your chocolate in.
- 20 to 30 second intervals in the microwave then stir. LESS TIME IS BEST!! Repeat this method until your chocolate is melted.
- Do not overheat your chocolate!! Putting the chocolate in the microwave to long will create hot spots and then start to burn your chocolate. Once your chocolate is burned, it has to be thrown away. There is no way to save your chocolate after it is burned. So, it is better to use caution when setting the timer.
What are Paramount Crystals?
- If you are using old chocolate or chocolate that is not wanting to melt very well, then I use Paramount Crystals to help in the melting process. Paramount Crystals are shortening flakes and a must have if you do a lot of chocolate work. Just sprinkle a few tablespoons over your chocolate before you melt in the microwave. The Paramount Crystals will melt and just stir it into your chocolate. Professional bakers use these crystals when making chocolate covered item. Because when biting into the chocolate, it is softer and does not break into pieces all over the place. If you do not have Paramount Crystals, then you can use a tablespoon of shortening instead. This also melts and is stirred into the chocolate.
- Temper your chocolate. To temper your chocolate, just melt it and then add a couple pieces of un-melted chocolate. Stir to melt the newly pieces of chocolate. Do not put the chocolate back into the microwave. Just keep on stirring until all is melted.
- Once the chocolate is melted, then place on the warm plate lined with a wet towel to keep warm. What is a warm plate you ask? It is the base of my West Bend Slow Cooker.
Hot Chocolate Bomb Molds
The silicone molds are the best coco bombs molds. I was able to get my silicone mold from amazon with-in a couple of days. Check it out here.
What Size Mold for Wedding Hot Chocolate Bombs?
What is the Best Size Mold for Hot Chocolate Bombs? The small balls are 2 inches in size. You can order the 2 inch smaller silicone mold. The larger balls are 3 inches in size. Order the 3 inch larger silicone mold.
How to Make Wedding Hot Chocolate Bombs
Step Two
Gather all of your ingredients to make your hot chocolate bombs. Melt your chocolate using the “How to Melt Chocolate” method in step one.
- Line your molds with the melted chocolate. Use about 1 Tablespoon of melted chocolate. With a food grade paint brush, a small baby spoon or a teaspoon for the large mold, apply the chocolate to the inside of the mold. Pop the mold into the freezer for a few minutes to set the chocolate.
How Do You Un-mold a Hot Chocolate Bomb Shell
- Once set the chocolate will pull away from the mold. With gloved hands, un-mold the chocolate shells. Gently, pull the top part of the mold from the chocolate. If it does not pull away, put the mold back into the freezer for a few more minutes. With your hand under the mold, gently peel the mold away from the shell starting on one side and working your way to the opposite side. Place the shells on a piece of paper towel with the edge down and the rounded part facing up. Continue un-molding until you have them all out of the mold. Flip the empty mold up-side down.
How to Assemble Your Cocoa Bombs
- Cradle a clean edged bottom chocolate shell in between the bumps of the mold. The secret to the perfect bomb is having a clean edge to your shell. To do that, warm a plate on a hot plate or in the microwave, and slightly melt the edge of each shell to get a clean edge.
- Fill the mold with 1 tablespoon of cocoa mix and your favorite topping. You can make your own homemade hot chocolate mix or purchase a canister of hot cocoa mix. Dehydrated marshmallow bits are my favorite add to the shell. Get the colored dehydrated marshmallow bits. Get the white dehydrated marshmallow bits.
- Slightly melt the edge of the top chocolate shell and quickly place it over-top the filled bottom chocolate shell. Gently press to seal the two shells together.
How to Decorate a Wedding Hot Chocolate Bomb
- Decorate as desired using your favorite toppings. If you have any extra melted chocolate, place into a piping bag or a sandwich Ziplock. Snip a little bit of the tip and with a zig-zag motion, pipe some of the melted chocolate across the top of the finished bomb. Garnish with the topping of your choice. I like to use white sugar crystals. But my favorite topping is edible white glitter flakes. Let the chocolate set before you try to move the bomb.
How Do You Use Hot Chocolate Bombs?
To serve, place the bombs into a paper wrapper and line up on your favorite serving tray. When your guests are ready to enjoy their treat, place a chocolate bomb into a coffee cup.
For your Cocoa Bombs Bar, have Thermal Carafes filled with hot milk or chocolate milk. Pour the hot milk overtop of the bomb and watch it explode!! Stir to combine. Serve with your favorite toppings.
How Long Can You Store Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Store your hot chocolate bombs between 60° to 75° Fahrenheit. If your bomb contains only dry ingredients, it should last up to 30 days as long as you tempered the chocolate correctly.
Hot Cocoa Bombs – FAQ
The chocolate will turn white and condensate if refrigerated or frozen. I do not recommend any sort of refrigerations when storing chocolate.
