Why Do You Soak Potatoes in Water Before Air Frying?

This is an optional step but if you have time, give it a try.  Soaking potatoes helps remove excess starch, which can cause fries to stick together and become soggy.

A 30-minute soak in cold water gives you that crispy exterior and fluffy interior that makes French fries so satisfying.

Garlic Parmesan Olive Oil

I love, love, love Delallo’s garlic parmesan dipping oil, but it is sometimes hard to find.  It is a very popular product and sometimes grocery stores have a hard time keeping it stocked on their shelves.

My family loves it so much and uses this garlic parmesan olive oil often that my husband has ordered directly from the Delallo company many, many times!  If you don’t have access to this product, you can make your own.

Add freshly minced garlic and grated parmesan cheese to your favorite olive oil.  Shake to combine.  It will not taste as good as the Delallo version but will work in a pinch.

How to Make French Fries in the Air Fryer

Preheat the Air Fryer: Using your Blackstone Pizza Oven/Air Fryer or other air fryer, set the temperature to 400°F.

Prep the Fries: Peel and slice the russet potatoes into even strips. You don’t want too thick of slices, but you don’t want super thin slices either.  For best results, aim for uniform sizes to ensure even cooking.

Soak the Sliced Potatoes (optional):  Place the raw potato pieces in cold water for 30 minutes (optional but recommended for crispier fries). Then drain and pat dry with paper towels.

Toss the Potato Slices:  In a large bowl with the garlic parmesan olive oil, salt, and pepper until well coated.

How to Air Fry Homemade French Fries

Arrange in a Single Layer:  Place fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket or tray. Avoid overcrowding.  Crispy fries turn out best if a little space is left around each piece.

Cook for 10 minutes:  Turn the fries halfway through cooking.  I like to use a pair of tongs for easy flipping.

Air Fry until Crispy:  Cook 10 minutes longer or until the fries are golden brown and crispy. Cooking times will vary depending on the size of the French fries and the type of air fryer that you are using.

Serve Hot:  For best results, serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce. You can also make these Ninja Foodi diced potatoes in your air fryer for a little different side dish.

How to Store Air Fryer Fries

Store any leftover fries in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 6 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 375°F for 3–5 minutes to bring back their crispiness.

How to Reheat French Fries in the Air Fryer

To bring leftover fries back to life, preheat your air fryer to 375°F. Place the fries in the basket or tray and cook for 3–5 minutes, shaking halfway through. They’ll be crispy and delicious again in no time.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Fries

I love to serve my crispy French fries with one of my smashed burgers!  This classic pairing is a must try!

My kids love tempura chicken strips or some Fried Chicken Breast with these air fryer French fries.  If you want to upscale your dinner, try my griddle garlic butter steaks or garlic butter chicken breast

Don’t forget the dipping sauces!  My family always serves my lick dob recipe (ketchup and mayo sauce), ranch, sriracha aioli, or my pesto mayo

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of potatoes?

Yes, but russet potatoes are best for crispy fries.

What if I don’t have garlic parmesan olive oil?

Use regular olive oil and add fresh minced garlic and grated parmesan cheese.

Do I need to peel the potatoes?

It’s optional. Leaving the skins on can add texture and nutrients.
