Tips and Tricks

Thinly Slice the Onions:  Thinner sliced onions will caramelize faster than thicker slices.  And develop a more caramelized flavor.

Don’t Rush the Process:  Caramelizing onions and mushrooms is all about patience.  Resist the urge to crank up the heat.  Low and slow is the way to go.

Use a Griddle Spatula:  A large flat spatula is handy for gently scraping and flipping the vegetables to ensure even cooking and caramelization.

Experiment with Flavors:  Experimenting with different herbs and seasonings to customize the flavor profile but take your mushroom and onions to another level.  Give it a try!

How to Make Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms

Preheat the Blackstone Griddle:  Start by preheating your Blackstone griddle to medium-low heat.  You want a gentle heat to slowly caramelize the onions and mushrooms without burning them.

Grease the Griddle:  Once the griddle is heated, add a generous amount of oil, butter, or a combination of both to the cooking surface.  Allow it to heat up slightly before adding the sliced vegetables.

Griddle Cook:  Add the mushrooms and onions to the greased flat top.  Season with salt and pepper.  Spread the vegetables into a thin layer across the griddle.  Let them cook slowly, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even caramelization.  This process can take several minutes and should not be rushed.  Be patient – the key to perfectly caramelized onions is low and slow cooking.

Cook Until Caramelized:  Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until both the onions and mushrooms are a deep golden-brown color.  Cooking times will vary.

Remove and Serve:  Once the mushrooms and onions are caramelized to your liking, remove them from the griddle and serve hot.  They make a great accompaniment to griddle steaks, burgers, omelets, or as a savory side dish.

What to Serve with Mushrooms and Onions

Pair the sautéed vegetables with griddle cooked cabbage pierogi’s, on top of a garlic butter steak, and layered between smashed cheeseburgers.  I also like to make them into an omelette, a hash brown omelet, or even scramble into some fluffy eggs.
