Dinner Roll Tips
– Do not hand knead the dough. – This is a soft dough recipe. Add the proper amount of flour, no need to add more flour.
– No need to place the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Just work from the bowl along with greased hands.
– You can use this dinner roll recipe along with a baking sheet pan to make individual dinner rolls. Use parchment paper on the baking pan to prevent sticking.
On a standard baking pan, you can place 12 dough balls (3 x 4), spaced apart, let rise, and bake in the oven until golden brown.
– Mix in a bread machine, proof, and then make into dinner rolls.
Yeast Rolls Ingredients
Hot Water
Granulated Sugar
Vegetable Oil
All Purpose Flour – You can also use bread flour, wheat flour or half whole wheat flour with half all-purpose flour.
Salt
Active Dry Yeast or Instant Yeast – I have made this recipe with both and the rolls turn out fine either way.
How to Make Yeast Rolls Dough
Gather all the ingredients to make the homemade dinner rolls. This dinner rolls recipe is best when using a KitchenAid Stand Mixer with a dough hook attachment to mix-up.
In the mixing bowl add the sugar, oil, and warm water (100°F). With a spatula, stir until the sugar is dissolved.
In a separate medium sized bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and salt with a whisk. Next, add the flour mixture to the water mixture in the mixing bowl.
Using the dough hook on low to medium speed, mix all the ingredients together until dough forms. With a spatula, scrape the sides of the bowl. Then mix for 2 minutes.
In an extra-large bowl, spray the inside with cooking spray. Scrape the dough from the sides of the bowl into the greased extra-large bowl.
With plastic wrap, cover the top of the bowl tightly. Next, cover the bowl with a towel and place in a warm spot.
I like to place next to a warm kitchen stove to ferment. When the dough ball has doubled in size, poke down. Let the dough ball rise a second time.
Once the dough ball has doubled in size the second time, it’s time to form the homemade dinner rolls.
How to Make Homemade Yeast Rolls
Grease a baking cake pan or a cast iron pan. Choose one of the following methods to shape your pull apart bread rolls.
You want the dough balls to be smooth and elastic. Keep your hands greased using cooking spray or softened butter whenever you are working with the dough.
Method #1: Portion the rolls out by squeezing the dough between your greased thumb and finger to make a smooth small ball. Watch how I use this method in my YouTube video Homemade Dinner Rolls Recipe.
Method #2: Divide dough into equal sections. Use a scale to measure each dough piece into equal sizes. Then shape into little balls by folding the dough into the center creating a smooth top.
Place into the greased baking dish, making sure to allow room for the rolls to rise. Start by placing the dough balls around the edge of the pan and work your way until the pan is full.
Depending on the size of your baking pan, you may need a couple pans for the amount of dough that you have. Cover the pan with a clean towel, set in a warm place, and let the rolls rise until they have doubled.

Homemade Yeast Rolls – FAQ
Dinner roll dough rises from the yeast that is added during the mixing process. Always inspect labels on your yeast package to ensure they are not expired or used before they expire. Old yeast will hinder the dough rising process and create rolls that do not rise properly.
Yes, you can make yeast rolls up ahead of time. You have two options. The first is to mix the dough up ahead of time, portion the rolls, and then refrigerate (up to a day or two) until ready to bake. The second option is to prepare the rolls, bake them, and store them for a couple days until ready to serve.
Yeast rolls go through several stages of rising and need plenty of time to do it. Do not rush this process and let the dough double in size – 3 different times! Yeast roll rise time will vary and depends on the temperature around the dough, the quality of the yeast, and the proper measurement of the ingredients.
