Hamburger Gravy

Hamburger gravy is a flavorful white gravy made with hamburger and is traditional served over toast.  Hamburger gravy has many names such as SOS, Shit on the Shingle, and creamed beef.

I grew up with my mother making us shit on the shingle for breakfast.  Now that she is gone, I have carried on the tradition for our family.  My dad, brother Joel and my nephew Alex request this hamburger gravy recipe often.

What Does SOS Mean?

There are several different meanings for SOS.

The younger generation texting version of SOS means “someone over shoulder”.  They text “SOS, just so you know”, meaning – watch what you say because someone might be looking at my phone.

My generation texting version of SOS is “What’s up?”, with a reply of “SOS! (same old shit)”

The older generation version of SOS means a Morse code distress signal.  With the meaning of “save our ship” or “save our souls”.

But the culinary version of SOS means “shit on the shingle”.  Which is a creamed beef recipe served over toast.  This is the version that I grew up with.
