The famous swirl makes this cinnamon french toast a showstopper!! Finding the perfect bread is key to making the best french toast.
My family has tried brioche, Texas toast, regular bread and the list goes on and on. Cinnamon raisin french toast is by far the best breakfast meal.
Our town has a local store that I am a frequent shopper at. The ladies at Orchard Lane Country Store in Bear Lake, Michigan make such good bread and I am a professional baker!! So, on a Tuesday or Saturday when fresh bread gets put out on their shelves, I stop and get a loaf to make my french toast with.
There are many different french toast recipes. You can make french toast sticks or even banana bread french toast! Who would have thought of banana bread french toast? Check out allrecipes here for their recipe.

How to Make French Toast
My best french toast recipe is pretty basic. Gather all of your ingredients to make your homemade french toast. This easy french toast recipe uses common pantry items like eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla and the right cinnamon raisin swirl bread.
Cinnamon Raisin bread photo credits go to my daughter Calli Ronning. She did an awesome job helping me with this post.
Best Bread for French Toast
The #1 key is finding the right bread. I don’t suggest using bread from the grocery store bread isle.
Instead, look at your local bakery. Ask around your town and see if others know of a good bakery spot.
French Toast Ingredients
French toast batter is pretty straightforward. In a shallow bowl, combine the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Whip together with a fork until well mixed.
Slice your bakery bread to your desired thickness. Heat your sauté pan on a medium temperature. Spray pan with cooking spray or use a small pat of butter to cook the french toast in.
Taking one slice at a time, place the bread into the egg mixture for a few seconds. Flip bread over and let the bread sit for a few more seconds.
Carefully, place the egg covered bread into the hot pan and brown on both sides. I like to gently pat the bread with a spatula so you will get even brown color on your toast. Once done, place french toast on a serving plate and continue cooking until all done.
Griddle Cooking
My preferred way of making french toast is on my griddle. Any griddle will do. With a griddle, you can cook a whole batch of homemade french toast at once. I have cooked on an electric tabletop griddle as well as a 36 inch Blackstone griddle.
What is the Secret to Good French Toast?
- Finding the right cinnamon raisin swirl bread.
- Soaking the bread to long in the egg mixture so the french toast turns soggy.
- Not soaking the bread long enough so the toast is dry.
- Cooking on the a flat-top griddle like the professionals do.
Frequently Asked Questions
Don’t add too much milk to your egg mixture. Over doing it on the milk causes the milk to soak into the bread before the eggs can cook on the toast. Another tip is to not soak your bread in the egg mixture too long. Over-soaking will cause soggy french toast.
Powdered sugar is my daughters preferred topping.
Granulated sugar
Grated lime or orange zest
Maple syrup
Chocolate or caramel syrup

Fruit toppings – fresh fruit, syrups or jam/jellies
