How to Make Air Fryer Bread Bowls

Prepare the dough:  Follow the instructions from my homemade bread bowl recipe. Let the dough rise until doubled in size.

Shape the dough:  Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball by pulling the edges underneath and pinching the bottom to seal. Place each dough ball on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover lightly and let rise for about 30 minutes. Before baking, score and egg wash the tops of each dough ball.

Preheat your Blackstone E-Series Air Fryer:  Set the air fryer to oven mode at 400°F. Allow it to preheat for a few minutes before baking.

Bake the Bread Bowls:  Place a few of the risen dough balls into the Blackstone Air Fryer (don’t overcrowd). Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bread sounds hollow when tapped.

Cool and hollow out:  Cool the bread bowls slightly. When ready to serve, slice off the top and carefully hollow out the center to make room for your soup or dip. Save the insides for dipping!

What to Serve with Bread Bowls

For an extra touch, brush the inside of the bowl with melted butter and toast it lightly in your air fryer for 1–2 minutes before adding your filling. These Air Fryer Bread Bowls are perfect for serving:

How to Freeze Air Fryer Bread Bowls

You can easily make these ahead of time!  Let the bread bowls cool completely.  Place them in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container.  Freeze for up to 3 months.

To reheat, thaw at room temperature, then warm in your Blackstone Air Fryer on oven mode at 350°F for 3–5 minutes until soft and slightly crisp.

Air Fryer Bread Bowls FAQ

Can I make these in a different air fryer?

Yes! Any air fryer with a large enough basket and an oven setting will work. Adjust bake times slightly depending on your model.

How do I keep the bread bowls soft inside?

Don’t over bake! Check for golden tops and a hollow sound when tapped. Cover cooling bread bowls with a clean towel to retain moisture.

Can I make mini bread bowls?

Absolutely! Divide the dough into 12–16 pieces instead of 8 and bake for 8–10 minutes. Perfect for smaller servings or appetizer dips.

Do I need to use parchment paper in the air fryer?

It’s optional but helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier.

Crusty Bread Bowls

Air Fryer Bread Bowls

These homemade crusty bread bowls are baked to perfection in your Blackstone Air Fryer! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, they’re perfect for serving soups, stews, or cheesy dips. Using your E-Series Blackstone Pizza Oven/Air Fryer in oven mode, you can create bakery-quality bread bowls in a fraction of the time — no traditional oven required!

Prep Time 30 minutes
Proof Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Bake Time 10 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • Sugar, Granulated 1/2 teaspoon
  • Yeast, Active Dry 1 1/2 tablespoons
  • Water, Warm 3 cups
  • Flour, All Purpose 7 1/2 to 9 cups
  • Salt, Table 1 tablespoon
  • Sugar, Granulated 2 tablespoons
  • Butter, Melted 4 tablespoons
  • Egg 1 each
  • Milk 1 tablespoon

Instructions

    1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine ½ teaspoon sugar with yeast and warm water. Stir gently, cover loosely with a towel, and let it sit until foamy (about 5–10 minutes). If the water is too hot, it can kill the yeast; if it’s too cold, it will take longer to activate.
    2. Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl or a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, combine 4 cups flour, salt, remaining sugar, butter, and the yeast mixture. Mix on low speed (or by hand) until combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1 cup at a time, until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and forms a soft, slightly tacky ball. (You’ll use about 7–7½ cups total.)
    3. Knead the Dough: Knead for 5 minutes on low speed or by hand on a floured surface. The dough is ready when it’s smooth and springs back when gently pressed. If sticky, add a bit more flour and continue kneading for 2–3 minutes.
    4. First Rise: Spray a large bowl with cooking spray. Place the dough inside, turning once to coat. Cover with a clean towel and let rise for 30–45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
    5. Shape the Bread Bowls: Punch down the dough to release air. Divide into 8 equal pieces (about 8.5 ounces each). Roll each piece into a smooth ball by tucking the edges under. Place seam-side down on a parchment-lined air fryer tray or baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a small “X” on the top of each dough ball.
    6. Second Rise: Cover the shaped dough with a towel and let rise for 30–40 minutes, or until doubled in size.
    7. Preheat the Blackstone Air Fryer: Set your E-Series Blackstone Air Fryer to 400°F in oven mode and allow it to preheat.
    8. Apply Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 egg and 1 tablespoon milk. Brush each dough ball lightly with the egg wash for a shiny golden crust.
    9. Bake the Bread Bowls: Place the dough balls into the air fryer (work in batches if needed). Make sure to allow room for the bread bowls to expand while baking. Bake at 400°F for 10–15 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
    10. Cool and Serve: Remove the bread bowls and let cool. When ready to serve, cut off the tops and scoop out the centers. Fill with your favorite soup, chili, or creamy dip — and enjoy!

Notes

  • Save the removed bread filling for extra dipping.
  • Store leftover bread bowls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 6 days.
  • For longer storage, wrap each bread bowl tightly in plastic wrap, place in a Ziplock freezer bag, and freeze for up to 2 months.
