Can You Cook Biscuits on a Griddle?

As a griddle expert, I get this question all the time! Yes, cooking biscuits on a griddle might seem unconventional, but it’s a fantastic method that yields soft, fluffy biscuits with a perfectly crisp exterior.

The key to success lies in using low heat and creating an oven-like environment on the griddle.  By placing your biscuits on parchment paper and covering them with a dome lid, you trap the heat, allowing them to bake evenly without burning.

The results are golden-brown biscuits that are every bit as good as those baked in a traditional oven.

How to Make Griddle Biscuits

Preheat the Griddle:  Set your Blackstone Griddle to low heat.  This is crucial to avoid scorching the biscuits.

Mix the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the Bisquick baking mix and milk until a soft dough forms.  Be careful not to over mix!  You want to keep the dough light and airy!

Prepare the Griddle:  Once the griddle is preheated, place a sheet of parchment paper on the griddle.  This helps to reduce the smoke smell created from the griddle transferring onto your biscuits.

Drop the Biscuits:  Using a pair of large spoons to create the drop biscuits.  With one of the spoons, scoop about ½ cup of the prepared dough and use the other spoon the scrape the dough off the first spoon onto the parchment paper griddle.  Making sure to leave some space between each dough ball for expansion.

Cook with a Dome Lid:  Cover the biscuits with a dome lid to create an oven effect.  This traps the heat around the biscuits, allowing them to cook through without burning.  Cook for about 8-10 minutes, checking occasionally.  If the bottom becomes golden brown but the biscuit is not fully cooked, flip them over and cook on the other side.

Test for Doneness:  Make sure the griddle biscuits are done before removing.  To test for doneness, use a wooden toothpick and insert into the top center.  Remove and look to see if the toothpick is doughy.  If it is doughy, continue to cook.  If the toothpick comes out clean, remove from the griddle.

Serve and Enjoy: You can serve your biscuits warm or let cool.  They are perfect with butter, honey or your favorite jam.  I like to serve my warm biscuits with crushed sweetened strawberries and some cool whip for a strawberry shortcake dessert.  My family loves these!!

What to Make with Homemade Biscuits?

Homemade biscuits are incredibly versatile and are used in a variety of dishes.  Keep it simple by topping your biscuit with butter, and honey or jam.  Or you can also try one of these options for a heartier dish.  Here are some ideas if you need them:

Breakfast Sandwiches: Slice a biscuit in half and fill with a fried egg patty, a slice of cheese, bacon, or sausage patty for a hearty breakfast.

Biscuits and Gravy:  A classic dish where biscuits are smothered in a ground sausage white sauce making a great comfort meal. I make a hamburger gravy that would be perfect to top a warm biscuit!

Creamy Chicken and Biscuits:  Top a biscuit with a creamy chicken and vegetable gravy.

Strawberry Shortcake:  Sweeten things up by using crumbled biscuits as the base for a strawberry dessert, topped with crushed fresh sweetened strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cook canned biscuits on a griddle?

Yes, you can cook canned biscuits on a griddle!  The method is very similar to cooking homemade biscuits.  I simply preheat the griddle to low heat, place pieces of the canned biscuits on the griddle that is lined with parchment paper and cover them with a dome lid.  Canned biscuits might cook a little faster than homemade ones, so keep an eye on them and check for doneness after about 6-8 minutes.
