Using a metal spatula on a Blackstone Griddle is the perfect tool to achieve your griddle mastery. As long as you are using a steel top Blackstone Griddle and not an electric Blackstone Griddle. If you are the proud owner of a gas Blackstone Griddle, then the oversized metal spatula is a must.
I love both my electric and steel top Blackstone Griddles!! But they have two completely different cooking surfaces which requires different cooking accessories.
Because I live in Michigan, I like to use my electric griddle indoors during the winter months and the gas griddle outside during the summer months.
The question that comes up in several Facebook griddle groups is “Can you use a metal spatula on a Blackstone Griddle?” The answer is yes and no!
On an outdoor gas griddle with a steel flat top, you want to use a metal spatula. But if you have an electric Blackstone Griddle that has a porcelain flat top, you DO NOT want to use a metal spatula.
You will scratch the porcelain griddle top and ruin it. But when it comes to choosing the right spatula, the question you want to ask, “Is my griddle a steel or porcelain flat top?”

Blackstone Griddle Steel Top
Follow these tips and guidelines to enjoy delicious outdoor griddle cooking without worrying about damaging your griddle surface. Then, grab your spatula, fire up your Blackstone Griddle, and get ready to sizzle up some culinary delights! Let’s go over the do’s and don’ts of a metal spatula usage on a gas Blackstone Griddle.
Do’s:
Stainless Steel Spatula: If you have a steel top griddle then you will want to use a high-quality metal spatula that is made out of stainless steel with a thin, flexible blade. Bonus if the spatula has a non-slip heat resistant rubber handle otherwise a wooden handle works great. Stainless steel is resistant to rust and easy to clean.
Proper Edges: Look for a spatula with thin flat or beveled edges that allows you to easily slide underneath food without damaging the griddle surface.
Clean Regularly: Make sure to keep the metal spatula clean to prevent any buildup of food residue or debris that could hinder the proper use of this griddle tool.
Don’ts:
Avoid Excessive Force: Metal spatulas are known for being sturdy but avoid applying excessive force when using them on your steel top Blackstone Griddle. Gentle, controlled movements are key to preventing damage to your spatula and your griddle.
Use Caution with Sharp Edges: If your spatula has sharp edges, be careful not to gouge your seasoned griddle. The sharp edges are great for getting under food easily but can scratch the griddle surface.

Spatula for Electric Blackstone Griddle
Electric Blackstone Griddles offer the convenience of indoor cooking with the same exceptional performance as the gas Blackstone Griddles. But their griddle tops are completely different and need to be treated different.
The electric Blackstone Griddle has a non-stick porcelain top that needs to be protected. DO NOT USE A METAL SPATULA ON AN ELECTRIC BLACKSTONE GRIDDLE! Let’s talk about the do’s and don’ts of using a plastic spatula on an electric griddle.
Do’s:
Sturdy Plastic Spatula: Make sure to use a plastic spatula that has a sturdy handle and has a thin wide blade.
Griddle Temperature: Electric griddles have a sensitive temperature control panel compared to gas griddles. Pay close attention to the heat settings to prevent overheating and potential spatula damage to the porcelain griddle surface.
Preheat Properly: Allow the electric griddle to preheat properly before cooking your food. This ensures that the cooking surface is evenly heated and reduces the risk of food sticking to the griddle top and having to scrape it off with the plastic spatula blade.
Don’ts:
Avoid Spatula Scraping: Be mindful of the amount of pressure you apply when using your plastic spatula on the electric griddle top. Excessive scraping or digging into the surface can cause scratches which will ruin the non-stick griddle surface.
Use Multiple Plastic Spatulas: Plastic spatulas tend to create a food build up on them making it difficult to use. If needed, swap out and use a clean plastic spatula to finish cooking your recipe.
