Swedish Meatball Recipe

This Swedish Meatball Recipe is creamy and loaded with flavor!  Slow cooker Swedish meatballs recipe has been in my family for more than 25 years and a favorite.  

Browned to perfection and smothered in a white sauce makes these easy Swedish meatballs a staple for your family’s menu.  Throw together the night before or the morning of when you want to serve the meatballs.

Swedish meatballs with cream of mushroom soup are the perfect potluck meal that will get rave reviews!  If you don’t want to use ground beef meatballs, then swap out and make these air fryer chicken meatballs along with the cream of mushroom topping.

How To Make a Swedish Meatball Recipe

To learn how to make a Swedish Meatball recipe, the first thing is to gather all your ingredients.

In a large bowl combine the hamburger, diced onion, egg, ketchup, crackers that have been crushed along with half of the salt and pepper.  

Combine the Hamburger, egg, diced onion, crushed crackers, ketchup, 1/2 the salt and pepper.

Using your hands, mix all the ingredients together until combined.

Next, form the burger mixture into balls about 1 ½ inches with the palm of your hands.  

Roll meatball mixture into 1 1/2 inch balls.

Brown the shaped balls using the method of your choice.  I prefer not to use any extra grease or fat when browning.

Use a hot sauté pan or my favorite, a George Forman griddle.  Brown 1 – 2 minutes on each side.  Do not crowd the pan and work in batches if need be.

In another bowl, combine the cream of mushroom and the water along with the remaining salt and pepper.  

Add a layer of the cream of mushroom mixture to the bottom of the slow cooker.  Place all your browned meatballs on top of the cream of mushroom mixture.

Coat the remaining cream of mushroom mixture over top of the browned meatballs.

Cook on medium to medium high for at least 4 hours but you can slow cook on medium for 10 hours.  Stir every so often if possible.    

Instant Pot Swedish Meatballs

As described above, combine the hamburger mixture, and roll into balls.  My preferred method of browning the meatballs is in a sauté pan or use a George Forman griddle.  

To make the Instant Pot Swedish Meatballs set the Instant Pot to Sauté – Less Mode.  Let the pot heat up until just warm.  

In a single layer, place your rolled meatballs and brown each side.  Add the lid to help the browning.  

The pot may read HOT.  If this happens, cool down the Instant Pot and continue till all the meatballs are browned.  

Make the cream of mushroom mixture as described above.  Add a layer of this mixture to the bottom of the Instant Pot, then all the browned meatballs and finally the rest of the cream of mushroom mixture.

Cover and set the Instant Pot to Slow Cook – Normal mode for 4 hours.  Stir every hour to combine the ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Hamburger 1 lb 6 oz (633 g)
  • Onion, diced small 1/2 cup (2.2 oz) (63 g)
  • Egg, large 1 each (1.65 oz) (47 g)
  • Saltine Cracker, crushed 10 squares (1.1 oz) (31 g)
  • Ketchup 2 Tablespoons (1.6 oz) (45 g)
  • Salt 1 teaspoon (0.25 oz) (7 g)
  • Pepper 1/2 teaspoon (0.1 oz) (2 g)
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup 2 cans (10 1/2 oz each) (596 g)
  • Water 1 1/4 cup (10.8 oz) (305 g)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your ingredients to make the meatballs.
  2. In a large bowl combine the hamburger, diced onion, egg, ketchup, crushed crackers along with half of the salt and pepper.

  9. Coat the remaining cream of mushroom mixture over top of the browned meatballs.
  10. Cook on medium to medium high for at least 4 hours but you can slow cook on medium for 10 hours.
  11. Gently stir the meatballs every hour if possible.
